Learn More About Our History, Values, and Commitment to Community"

The Tropical Anglers Club (TAC) traces its origins to a modest shack beside the Miami River, where a small group of dedicated fishermen gathered under the shadow of a bridge. These founding members, united by their passion for angling, established the club in the summer of 1953, making it the newest fishing organization in Miami at the time. Today, TAC stands as the city’s oldest fishing club, a rare constant in a community known for rapid change and fleeting traditions.

Throughout its history, TAC has demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability. The club’s members have not only grown the organization’s reputation but have also made significant contributions to the evolution of fishing in South Florida and the Bahamas. TAC anglers have been at the forefront of boat and tackle design innovations, have refined and popularized new fishing techniques, and have consistently excelled in prestigious tournaments. Their achievements include setting hundreds of IGFA fishing records and celebrating the induction of several members into the Fishing Hall of Fame.

In the early days, Miami was a quiet town outside of the winter tourist season, with locals affectionately calling it “Miama,” rhyming with Alabama. TAC’s incorporation was formalized on July 16, 1953, by Circuit Judge Marshall C. Wiseheart. These original documents, now framed and displayed in the clubhouse, serve as a testament to the club’s enduring legacy. The clubhouse itself is adorned with photographs of the founders proudly displaying their impressive catches, alongside modern screens showcasing the club’s ongoing adventures and camaraderie.

The club’s journey has seen several relocations, each reflecting its growth and evolving needs. After outgrowing the original shack, TAC moved to the Starlite Lounge at 20 SW 17th Ave., a lively venue that once featured live music and welcomed musicians through newspaper ads. Although the Starlite Lounge has since been replaced by a gas station, its memory remains a cherished part of TAC’s story. The club later settled in a storefront near SW 62nd Avenue and Bird Road, but the desire for a permanent home led to the acquisition of a 6,500-square-foot lot and the construction of a dedicated clubhouse at 6720 SW 39th Terrace in 1961. Despite challenges such as Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which caused significant damage, TAC rebuilt and continues to thrive in its longstanding location.

At its core, TAC is defined by the fellowship and exchange of ideas among its members. The club embraces anglers of all ages and backgrounds, fostering an inclusive environment where expertise and enthusiasm are equally valued. Members range from specialists who focus on particular styles of fishing to versatile anglers who pursue a wide variety of species with different techniques. The club’s fleet includes everything from simple skiffs and john boats to large offshore vessels, reflecting the diverse interests and ambitions of its members.

TAC’s activities extend beyond fishing, encompassing a vibrant social calendar and a spirit of friendly competition. Monthly outings take members to renowned fishing destinations such as Biscayne Bay, the Everglades, Dry Tortugas National Park, the Bahamas, and even upstate bass fishing spots. Regular Tuesday evening meetings are a highlight, featuring exceptional meals prepared by members who take pride in their culinary skills, supported by a team of enthusiastic helpers.

The club’s longevity and success are rooted in active participation and strong leadership. As longtime member Jim Donnellan wisely observed, “You must have an active membership with good leadership. Otherwise the club is not going to be of much value to anyone. If you decide you like a certain club, you should go into it with the idea of not only learning, but making some contribution to the club.” This ethos continues to guide TAC, ensuring that every member has the opportunity to learn, share, and contribute.

Tropical Anglers Club warmly welcomes prospective members to visit and experience its unique culture firsthand. Members typically begin arriving around 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, with formal meetings commencing at 7 p.m. The club remains committed to fostering a sense of community, celebrating the joys of fishing, and preserving its rich heritage for generations to come.
